Topic: Establishing Practices in Reporting Excellence - Better Data Drives Better Decisions

Speakers:
Todd Schreiner, Director, Parson Consulting
John Genell, Director, Parson Consulting

Gaining access to performance related information in a timely consistent manner is critical to the office of finance's ability to serve their internal customers. Most organizations today are data rich and information poor, as a result obtaining relevant performance information in a form factor that is easily understood, shared, and acted upon is increasingly difficult. To address this, many leading organizations are adopting known Reporting Excellence best practices - to help key decision makers get to the information that matters faster and make decisions with greater confidence. These Reporting Excellence best practices enable information specialists to focus on consolidating basic management reporting processes into a single operating framework which includes support for planning, budgeting, forecasting, standard reporting, and ad hoc reports. Establishing this consistent basis of reporting and information management, designed to support the business conversation means finance spends less time on reconciling history, addressing data validity, and more time on in-depth information analysis that supports the business and transforms the office of finance into the performance backbone of the organization that supports growth and provides a competitive advantage.

Todd Schreiner and John Genell are Directors with Parson Consulting's Finance practice and will be presenting our topic this month. Todd has over 16 years of experience advising and leading business and technology programs for Fortune 1000 clients and brings a wealth of knowledge in performance management, financial management reporting and infrastructure, budgeting and forecasting, financial processes and operations, and application selection and design to our clients.

John has over 25 years of experience in Industry as well as Consulting. For the past 18 years he has focused on developing Planning and Reporting solutions for a wide range of organizations from mid-size to the Fortune 1000. John is the market leader for Parson's Denver and Minneapolis offices.

LuciData Presentation: What Lies Beneath: What you should know internal threat management
Speaker: Jeremy Wunsch, CEO and Director of Data Forensics, LuciData

Fair Value Measurements & Business Combinations
FAS 157, Fair Value Measurements, defines fair value, establishes a framework for measuring fair value in GAAP, and expands disclosures about fair value measurements. It is effective beginning 1/1/07 for calendar year companies. FAS 159, Fair Value Option for Financial Assets and Financial Liabilities, permits entities to choose to measure many financial instruments and certain other items at fair value that are not currently required to be measured at fair value. The objective is to improve financial reporting by providing entities with the opportunity to mitigate volatility in reported earnings caused by measuring related assets and liabilities differently without having to apply complex hedge accounting provision. FAS 141(R), Business Combinations, is another one of the FASB and IASB convergence projects with issuance expected any day now. FAS 141 (R) will likely be effective for annual periods beginning after 12/15/08. There will be significant impacts and we will discuss why you might want to make sure you close your deals in 2008 rather than 2009.

Speaker: James S. Allen
Jim is a partner in KPGM’s Denver office, serving clients in the financial services and real estate industries. Throughout his 18 years of public accounting experience, Jim has provided audit and business advisory services to public and privately held clients in a variety of industries. He has extensive experience with mergers and acquisitions, and initial and secondary registration statements for debt and equity offerings.

What Lies Beneath: What You Should Know Internal Threat Management
To help companies avoid costly litigation and prepare the strongest cases possible, you must be able protect, extract and analyze information from a wide variety of data storehouses in the proper manner.

In this presentation, one will learn:
  • What are the possible threats from insiders
  • How to use data forensics to identify internal threats
  • First steps you should take to respond to an incident and mitigate further damage
  • Be proactive: how to use technology and internal/external resources to prevent future threats
  • How to measurably reduce your risk of future incidents
